US ambassador calls on opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman

Brent T Christensen, the United States ambassador to Bangladesh, has paid a courtesy call on Jamaat-e-Islami ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman MP. The meeting was held on Tuesday at the opposition leader’s office in the parliament building. The ambassador was accompanied by the embassy’s political and economic counsellor Eric Geelan and political officer Hermanoshi Bernard. The meeting took place in a highly cordial and warm atmosphere.

The two sides exchanged views on the country’s overall political and economic situation after the election, the coming national budget, the potential for bilateral trade and investment, various aspects of Bangladesh-US relations and other matters of mutual interest. There was also productive discussion on the development of Bangladesh’s democratic institutions, good governance, economic cooperation and contemporary regional and international issues. Both sides expressed the hope of further strengthening relations on the basis of mutual respect, cooperation and understanding.

The opposition leader’s foreign-affairs adviser barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman MP and foreign-affairs team member Ali Ahmad Mabrur were present at the meeting.
