The funeral prayer of Saifullah Bari, president of the Islami Chhatra Shibir in the Bonarpara union of Saghata upazila in Gaibandha, has been held. The funeral prayer was led by the deceased’s father, Habibur Rahman, the imam of the upazila Jame Mosque.
The funeral prayer took place at 3 p.m. on Monday (June 22) on the grounds of the Bonarpara Government Kazi Azhar Ali Model High School.
Among those who took part were the Gaibandha-5 MP and veteran freedom fighter Abdul Wares; the district Jamaat ameer and sadar-seat MP, Abdul Karim; the Gaibandha-3 (Sadullapur-Palashbari) MP, Maulana Nazrul Islam Lebu; and the central secretary general of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Sibgatullah Sibga, along with other central and district Shibir leaders.
Saifullah Bari was stabbed to death in public on Sunday (June 21) afternoon.
According to police and witnesses, Saifullah was stabbed at around 2:45 p.m. at Bonarpara Charmatha in Saghata upazila by the convener of the Bonarpara union Juba Dal, Mokhlesur Rahman Mukul, and his associates.
In a district Juba Dal release on Sunday night, it was announced that Mokhlesur Rahman Mukul had been expelled from the party, including his primary membership, over specific allegations of involvement in activities contrary to the party’s policy and ideals.
That night, local people set fire to the house of the Juba Dal leader. In addition, the Gaibandha district Islami Chhatra Shibir held protest marches, in the capital that night and in Gaibandha at midday on Monday, demanding the arrest and punishment of those involved.
