The second session of the 13th parliament has begun. This budget session, the current government’s first, began at 3pm on Sunday. The 2026-27 fiscal year’s budget will be presented on 11 June. Around the budget session, the opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the 11-party alliance are becoming vocal in parliament. Having shaken off the Eid-ul-Azha holiday mood, the alliance is also becoming active again on the streets around previously announced divisional rallies.

Along with demands to implement the July charter and the referendum verdict, recent issues — power and energy price hikes, the law-and-order situation, and the appointment of what it called a “controversial person” as chairman of Islami Bank — will be added to their movement programme. Jamaat-e-Islami held protests across all metropolitan areas, including the capital, last Thursday against the recent price hikes. Announcing that programme on Wednesday, opposition leader and Jamaat ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman had said it was not the programme of any party but of 180 million people, and that Jamaat would take to the streets with demands for the people, not the party.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) protested in the capital on Wednesday against the price hikes, and Khelafat Majlis held a protest march in the capital on the same issue on Saturday, with Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis announcing a protest in the capital today; other parties also protested the government’s decisions through statements. To demand implementation of the referendum verdict on reforms under the July charter, the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance announced divisional rallies via a liaison-committee meeting and press briefing on 30 April. The first rally was held in Rajshahi on 16 May before Eid; the alliance will rally in Chattogram on 13 June, Khulna on 20 June, Mymensingh on 27 June, Rangpur on 11 July, Barishal on 18 July and Sylhet on 25 July. Liaison-committee coordinator and Jamaat assistant secretary general Hamidur Rahman Azad said they also plan exchange meetings with teachers, lawyers, doctors and media workers, and a grand rally in Dhaka in October.
