Three children from two families drowned in the same pond at Jamdia village in Bagharpara upazila of Jashore on Friday.

The girls, aged 13, 10 and 10, died at about 11:30am. Two of them were sisters and the third was a neighbour’s daughter. They are not being named because they were minors.

Atiar Rahman, a union parishad member for Jamdia, said, citing witnesses, that the three had been bathing on the steps of a neighbouring family’s pond. At about 11:30am a relative came to the pond looking for two of them and found their clothes on the concrete steps, with no sign of the children. Growing suspicious, she moved towards the steps and saw bubbles rising in the water. She called out, drawing neighbours, who went into the pond and began searching. The three bodies were recovered from the water a short time later.

With help from neighbours they were taken to the Bagharpara Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared them dead.

Dr Masnun Abdullah of the health complex’s emergency department said the three were given pulse checks and electrocardiograms on arrival, which confirmed that none had survived. The bodies were later taken home.

Shahjalal Alam, officer-in-charge of Bagharpara police station, said an unnatural death case had been recorded, as the families had made no complaint.
