A lawyer named Nizam Uddin Shanto has been stabbed to death by a gang in Bagerhat.
The incident took place late on Friday night, July 24, in the Harikhali area of the town.
Shanto was a resident of the Pashchimbagh area of Bagerhat Sadar upazila.
The superintendent of police of Bagerhat, Hasan Mohammad Nasser Rikabdar, said that on being informed, police recovered the body and took it for a post-mortem. Search operations have also been stepped up at various places in the town. Several police teams are working to uncover what actually happened, he said.
Members of Shanto’s family and fellow lawyers said Shanto was returning home by motorcycle after finishing work at his chamber, as he did every day. On the way, several members of a gang blocked his motorcycle. When they struck him with a knife, he tried, wounded, to take shelter in a nearby house. The attackers then fled. Locals rescued him and took him to the district 250-bed hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
On hearing of the lawyer’s killing, lawyers’ leaders gathered in front of the morgue of the Bagerhat 250-bed hospital on Saturday morning. They demanded that those involved in the brutal killing be quickly brought under the law.
