Two people have died — one struck by lightning, the other by drowning — in the Dhumghat area of Ishwaripur union in Satkhira’s Shyamnagar upazila. The deaths happened on Monday in Materchak and Shiltala villages of the Dhumghat area.

According to local sources, at about 1pm on Monday, a housewife named Khairunnesa (40) was killed by lightning while working in a field beside her home in Materchak village. She was the wife of Abdul Aziz Gazi of that village.

The victim’s relatives and local UP member Md Abul Kalam said Khairunnesa died on the spot when lightning struck as she was working in the field beside her home.

Separately, at about 10am the same day, a farmer named Krishnapada Baidya (50) drowned in a pond in Shiltala village of the Dhumghat area. He was the son of the late Narayan Baidya of that village.

According to the family, Krishnapada Baidya fell accidentally into a pond beside the road while going to the fields for farm work in the morning. When relatives could not find him for a long time, they began searching, and his body was later recovered from the pond.
