Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered strong steps to curb environmental pollution across the country, including the capital Dhaka. He called for removing unfit vehicles from the roads, curbing brick-kiln pollution and, where needed, increasing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to control excessive horn use. He gave the directives at a meeting on environmental pollution at the prime minister’s office on Saturday (18 July).

The meeting held detailed discussions on various steps to prevent air and noise pollution, deciding in particular to take quick, effective measures against air pollution from brick kilns, with Tarique Rahman stressing the use of environmentally friendly alternative technology to produce bricks. The meeting also discussed in detail how to control excessive horn use by vehicles in the capital, with the head of government directing law-enforcement agencies to play a stricter role, and discussing how AI technology — like the AI cameras used in traffic management — could be used to control horns. The prime minister directed effective steps to quickly remove unfit, expired and polluting buses, trucks and other vehicles from the capital’s roads, and ordered automatic traffic-signal systems to be introduced quickly at at least 50 more points in the capital.

Present at the meeting were the minister and state minister for environment, forests and climate change, the state minister for water resources, the prime minister’s special assistant for environment, forests and climate change, the administrators of the Dhaka South and Dhaka North City Corporations, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner, the additional police commissioner (traffic), and senior officials of various ministries and agencies.
