Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. has surpassed Pelé’s record of 77 goals as Brazil’s all-time leading international scorer, setting a new benchmark for the world’s most football-rich nation — one whose green-and-gold shirt has been worn by Pelé, Ronaldo, Romário, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho.

Neymar’s most celebrated achievement beyond the scoring record was leading Brazil to its first Olympic football gold medal at the 2016 Rio Games. He played the central role in the Seleção’s landmark run, and in the final against Germany at the Maracanã, it was Neymar who struck the decisive penalty in the shootout, sparking scenes of national celebration. In the same tournament, he scored what is recognised as the fastest goal in Olympic football history — finding the net within seconds of kick-off in the semi-final against Honduras.

Neymar’s career has spanned more than a decade at the top of world football, during which he has earned recognition for his dribbling, pace and attacking instincts alongside the goal-scoring and trophy record that defines his legacy.
