A murder case has been filed over the killing of Hossain Ali, alias Hossain Thakur (55), who was shot dead in front of his son in Pabna, and police have arrested three people suspected of involvement. The principal accused named in the case, however, have not yet been caught. The three were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday (10 June): Matiar Rahman (40), son of Akmal Khan of Dharmagram in Ataikula thana of Pabna Sadar; Sharif Pramanik (35), son of the late Amin Pramanik of Pushpapara village; and Monirul Islam (28), son of Sohrab Molla of Jafrabad village. On Tuesday (9 June), the dead man’s wife, Afsana Khatun, filed a murder case at Pabna Sadar police station naming nine people and accusing eight to ten unidentified others.

At a press conference at his office on Wednesday afternoon, Superintendent of Police Md Sufi Ullah said the three were arrested in dawn raids in different areas, and that a motorcycle used in the killing, an unfired bullet and a spent cartridge were seized from them. The SP said preliminary findings indicate a running feud over dominance between regional leaders and members of two extremist organisations — the “Purba Banglar Communist Party” and the “Purba Banglar Communist Party Lal Pataka” — and that the plan to kill Hossain Ali was made about a month ago in that feud; whether any other motive or link exists is also being examined.

The two principal accused — Monirul Islam alias Tota (35), son of Abdus Samad of Jafrabad Puratanpara village, who allegedly fired the shots, and Shahin (28), son of Gopla — had not been arrested as of Wednesday. The three arrested are not named in the FIR; the SP said the case lists eight to ten unidentified accused and the three were arrested as suspects based on the investigation, while operations to catch the named accused continue and arrests are expected soon. Hossain Ali was dropping his son Rohan (12) at the Jamia Ashrafia madrasa in the Masum Bazar area of Pabna town on Monday (8 June) evening when assailants shot him dead at the madrasa gate, in front of the boy.
