West Bengal’s state health department has called for a report after 10 newborns died in a single day at Malda Medical College Hospital. The incident occurred in the second week of August. Hospital authorities have confirmed the deaths of the 10 newborns on that day.
According to hospital sources, eight of the 10 newborns who died that day had been brought to Malda Medical College Hospital from elsewhere — meaning those eight infants had been born either at other government hospitals or at nursing homes.
According to hospital authorities, the newborns brought in from outside had various complications, including respiratory distress, jaundice and heart problems, which led to their deaths.
Prasenjit Bar, superintendent of Malda Medical College Hospital, said: “Ten children died in a single day recently at Malda Medical. But of those 10, only two were born at Malda Medical itself. The rest had been referred to Malda Medical from elsewhere in critical condition.”
He added: “The health department has sought a report on this. We have submitted a preliminary report. A full report will also be sent soon.” After the deaths of 10 newborns in a single day came to light, the health department sought detailed information on the matter. Hospital authorities have said a full report will be sent promptly.
