Dhaka:
Islami Bank Bangladesh chairman Zubaidur Rahman has resigned, submitting his resignation to the bank’s board and to the central bank governor on Sunday, sources at the central bank and Islami Bank said.
Bangladesh Bank dissolved the Islami Bank board after the fall of the Awami League government during a student-led uprising. The central bank then appointed Obaidullah Al Masud as an independent director, and he subsequently took over as chairman.
Masud resigned in July last year. Rahman, the bank’s new independent director, then joined the board and also took over as chairman. He stepped down on Sunday after 10 months in the role, the sources said.
Rahman began his career in 1975 as a lecturer in the finance department at Dhaka University. He went on to earn a doctorate in finance from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.
He has taught at the State University of New York and at Bocconi University in Italy. He has also held visiting scholar positions at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States and at Moscow State University in Russia.
Rahman is the founding vice-chancellor of ZNRF University of Management Sciences in Dhaka. A former senior official at the World Bank, he has also worked as an independent adviser to public and private sector clients in developing and emerging economies.
