Portugal has banned smartphone use during the school day through Grade 9 to improve classroom focus, reduce cyberbullying and strengthen the social environment in schools.
The Education Ministry said Monday, Aug. 3, that a pilot ban had improved student attention and communication between teachers and students. During breaks, students spent more time playing and socializing with classmates instead of using phones, the ministry said.
Exceptions will allow smartphone use for health needs, students with special needs and educational activities approved by teachers. Several other European countries have introduced similar restrictions on smartphones in schools.
