The Sagardighi-Bharadoba and Sagardighi-Ghatail roads are important routes, but both sides are choked with dense bushes and creepers that in places have encroached on the road and narrowed it. With frequent bends as well, accidents are a regular occurrence.

To ease travel and reduce the risk of accidents, four young men from the Shahargopinpur area of Ghatail upazila took the initiative to clear the roadside bushes. They are Abu Rayhan, Kabir Hossain, Asadul and Jasim.

On Friday, the young men voluntarily cleared about two kilometres along both sides of the Sagardighi-Bharadoba road, and they said they would carry out similar work on other important roads in phases.

“We have already cleared the bushes at all the dangerous bends on the Ghatail-Sagardighi, Sagardighi-Bharadoba, Sakhipur-Kalihati, Ghatail-Madhupur and Sagardighi-Garobazar roads,” Rayhan said. He said the group, named Road Care Bangladesh (RCB), aimed to ensure safe travel, and that people from various areas sent them information and photos of accident-prone spots, which the four-member team tried to clear where it could.

Locals said the Sagardighi-Bharadoba road had many bends and that the roadside bushes had made it even narrower, causing frequent accidents, and that the RCB team’s voluntary cleanup had transformed the road.

Praising the team, Tangail Roads and Highways Division sub-assistant engineer Al Islam said: “Although this is our job, limitations mean large-scale bush clearing is not always possible. The young men’s initiative is undoubtedly praiseworthy.”
