Bangladesh’s ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina recently spoke directly and virtually with the media in New Delhi, India. Though Dhaka has voiced deep anger and protest over the incident, Delhi claims the Indian government had no role in the press conference — and does not endorse any of Sheikh Hasina’s remarks about the Bangladesh government.
Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks at the ministry’s regular weekly briefing on Friday (7 August).
Clarifying India’s position, Jaiswal said: “The government had no role in Sheikh Hasina’s press conference. It was entirely an event organised by a private media outlet.”
He added that the Indian government did not endorse any of the remarks Sheikh Hasina had made at the event about Bangladesh’s legally constituted government.
Earlier, Dhaka had warned Delhi against allowing Sheikh Hasina to use Indian territory to conduct any political activity or make statements against Bangladesh, making an advance request that India remain cautious about her political activities.
But despite that request, Bangladesh voiced deep sorrow and strong protest over Sheikh Hasina facing the media directly in New Delhi.
