Three women from the same family drowned while bathing in the Mora Kal River near Boubazar in Parbatipur upazila, Dinajpur, on Thursday (June 25).

The victims were Dulali Begum, 22; her younger sister, a 14-year-old student in class eight; and their sister-in-law, Aklima Begum, 19. All three submerged unexpectedly while bathing at the Boubazar ghat.

When the women did not return home after about an hour, family members went to the riverbank and found their clothes left behind but the three missing. Locals cast a net in the river and recovered all three bodies.

Residents said the Boubazar ghat of the Mora Kal River had long been used for bathing by local men and women, but the riverbed had deepened unexpectedly this year, causing the tragedy.

Parbatipur Model Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Wadud confirmed the incident and said police had been sent to the scene and an investigation was under way.
