Electricity prices have been raised at both the wholesale and retail levels. The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the increase on Wednesday at a news conference held in the hearing room of its office at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) building in Ramna, Dhaka.

Under the announcement, wholesale electricity prices rose by 19.85 percent and retail prices by an average of 16.68 percent. The wholesale price was raised from Tk 7 by Tk 1.39 to Tk 8.39. The retail price was raised from Tk 9.11 by Tk 1.52 to Tk 10.63.

Earlier, BERC held a two-day public hearing on the proposed price increase on May 20 and 21. At the hearing, the country’s six power distribution companies proposed raising prices by between 85 paisa and Tk 2.05 per unit.

The most recent increase came in February 2024, when the average wholesale price of electricity was raised by executive order from Tk 6.70 per unit to Tk 7.04.
