Consumer rights drive in Damurhuda fines three businesses Tk25,000

The National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection fined three businesses a total of Tk25,000 during an inspection drive in markets across Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga for failing to display price lists, using non-iodised salt and producing food in unhygienic conditions.

The drive ran from 11am to 2pm on Wednesday (August 12) under the leadership of Mohammad Mamunul Hasan, assistant director of the Chuadanga district office.

During the day-long operation, officials inspected fertiliser, seed and medicine shops, hotels and sweet-making businesses. M/S Gausia Store owner Md Abdul Hai Siddiq of Karpas Danga was fined Tk5,000 for failing to properly display a price list.

Md Liton Ali, owner of M/S Bhai Bhai Hotel in Damurhuda market, was fined Tk10,000 for cooking with non-iodised salt. M/S Selim Mistanna Bhandar owner Md Selim Uddin was fined Tk10,000 for making yoghurt without production or expiry dates and without a licence, and for storing and selling sweets in a dirty, unhygienic environment.

A total of Tk25,000 in fines was imposed and collected from the three businesses under relevant sections of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009.

During the drive, traders were instructed to display updated price lists, buy and sell goods at set and reasonable prices, and not sell expired or substandard seeds, medicines or baby food.

Mohammad Mamunul Hasan said such drives would continue in the public interest to control the prices and quality of essential goods and protect consumers.

A representative of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Md Rafiqul Islam, and a Chuadanga district police team assisted with the operation.
