An unprecedented heatwave is continuing across South Korea. Severe-heat warnings remained in force in most parts of the country on Monday. With temperatures breaking all past records and heat-related illness rising, the public-health situation has become worrying, Anadolu reported.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said temperatures had crossed 40 degrees Celsius in various parts of the country on 29 July. In the south-eastern city of Daegu, the temperature topped 40 degrees Celsius for the first time since August 1942.
In Yangsan, near Daegu, a high of 42.5 degrees Celsius was recorded the previous day — the highest since modern weather observation began in 1904.
The ongoing heatwave is raising health risks nationwide. At least 14 people have died since mid-May. Among them, a 40-year-old man died in Incheon on Monday with a body temperature of nearly 40 degrees Celsius. Two farmers, aged 60 and 80, were also found dead in South Chungcheong province over the weekend.
According to the KMA, the prolonged heatwave has been caused by the influence of multiple high-pressure systems over the Korean peninsula and intense sunshine under clear skies.
