Information Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr. Zahedur Rahman said Awami League’s activities are currently banned by executive order. The party will be tried at the tribunal for genocide and crimes against humanity, and only the court, after the trial concludes, will decide whether Awami League can continue to exist in the country as a political party.
The adviser made the remarks at a press conference organized by the Department of Information at the secretariat on Tuesday.
He said Awami League itself has not been banned — only its activities have been banned. “Let them wait a while. Our home minister has said, and our ICT [tribunal authorities] have said, that the investigation is ongoing. They only need to wait until then. If the trial finds that they should not be banned — and again, I say this is entirely the court’s jurisdiction, and the judge will decide after hearing all parties — then they will be able to resume their activities,” he said.
