The death toll in a shooting at a Thailand school has risen to eight. The dead include the suspected teenage attacker and five teachers of the school.

The shooting took place today at a school in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, adjacent to the capital Bangkok.

According to Reuters, police identified the attacker as a student.

The shooting occurred at Debsirin School shortly after 10am local time. Authorities say the suspected attacker is a 14-year-old boy who killed his grandparents at his home before going to the school.

Police said the 9mm pistol he used belonged to his grandfather. Various reports said at least 34 more rounds were found on him.

Police confirmed the suspected attacker died. Authorities say they do not yet know his motive.

More than 30 people were injured, nine of them in “critical” condition, Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said.

The incident has renewed calls to review Thailand’s gun-control system. Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership among Southeast Asian countries.
