The Tongi Tamirul Millat Central Students’ Union (TAKSU) has held a human chain in protest at an attack on Dhaka Alia Madrasa principal Mohammad Obaidul Haque. The programme, demanding the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved, was held on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in front of the institution’s main gate in Gazipur’s Tongi on Thursday afternoon.

Hundreds of teachers and students of Tongi Tamirul Millat Madrasa took part in the human chain. Speakers demanded a peaceful environment on campuses, an end to terrorism and factional politics, and guarantees for teachers’ safety.

The human chain, chaired by TAKSU vice-president (VP) Moinul Islam and conducted by general secretary (GS) Murtaza Hasan Fuad, had Abdul Kaiyum, vice-principal of the girls’ section of Tongi Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasa, as chief guest.

In his chief guest’s remarks, Abdul Kaiyum said: “A proper environment must be restored to all campuses in the country. Factional politics, hall grabbing, free meals, extortion and all wrongdoing must be stopped on campus. Those involved in the attack on Professor Obaidul Haque must be brought under exemplary punishment without delay.”

In his chair’s remarks, TAKSU VP Moinul Islam said: “A campus is a factory for building the country and its people. An educational institution can be no place for any terrorist, thug or extortionist. An attack on respected teachers cannot be accepted in any way. Madrasa students made an important contribution to the July movement. But terrorist activity on campus is staining that environment.”

He also said the administration must take effective steps to ensure teachers’ safety and maintain a proper educational environment.

Special guests at the human chain included Tongi Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasa head muhaddis Dr Moazzem Hossain Azhari, Faqih Ibrahim Khalil, Aminul Haque, and lecturers Nurul Amin and Omar Faruk. Leaders of TAKSU at various levels, teachers and students, and a large number of the institution’s ordinary students also took part.

Speakers called on the government to bring those involved in the attack under the law and ensure exemplary punishment, and to ensure a safe, terror-free environment at all educational institutions in the country.
