Law enforcement has further tightened security across the entire diplomatic zone in Baridhara and Gulshan, Dhaka, after two foreign embassies in the city received threats by email.

Abu Khair, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Diplomatic Security Division, confirmed the matter Sunday.

Abu Khair said: “Threatening emails were sent to the Chinese and Russian embassies. But where they came from hasn’t been established. We suspect this is a scam, a fake.”

The police official said the foreign embassies based in Dhaka informed Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry of the matter, as required under standard procedure.

After the Foreign Ministry informed police headquarters and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, monitoring by law enforcement in the embassy areas was further strengthened.

ADC Abu Khair further said: “They didn’t inform us of anything directly. It seems they informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I haven’t received anything officially, but once we learned of it, our existing security measures were simply reinforced further. We don’t think this is anything serious.”

However, Abu Khair said no general diary or written complaint has been filed at any police station over the matter.
