The curator of the national zoo, Dr Md Atikur Rahman, has been temporarily suspended over the much-discussed albino buffalo named “Donald Trump.” A decision has also been taken to bring departmental action against him.

The information was given in a notification signed on Saturday (May 30) by Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Secretary Md Delwar Hossain.

It said a decision had been taken to take departmental action against Dr Md Atikur Rahman — a BCS (Animal Husbandry) cadre officer and curator of the national zoo — on charges of misconduct, under the Government Service Act 2018 and the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 2018. He has also been temporarily suspended and will receive a subsistence allowance during the suspension. The notification did not state the nature of the allegation.

Recently, the name “Donald Trump” — misspelled — was written on the identification plate of the much-discussed albino buffalo kept at the national zoo. The matter sparked widespread discussion on social media and later reached the highest levels of government. Objections were raised not only over the misspelling but also over keeping a buffalo named after US President Donald Trump on a government institution’s display board. The decision was taken on both grounds. The plate was later changed and the buffalo’s name is now displayed as “White Buffalo.”
