A 26-year-old man has been killed after falling between two carriages of the Titas Commuter train while trying to descend from its roof at Narsingdi railway station.

The victim, Md Amir Hossain, son of late Shamsul Haq from Nagar Baniyadi in Narsingdi Sadar upazila, died in the accident around 7:30 a.m. on Friday, witnessed by hundreds of people at the station.

Railway police, eyewitnesses and the victim’s relatives said Amir Hossain had traveled to the Kella Shah shrine in Akhaura, Brahmanbaria, with two friends on Thursday afternoon. Unable to find space inside the overcrowded train on their return the next morning, the three climbed onto the roof of the Titas Commuter.

When the train stopped at Narsingdi station, many passengers began descending from the roof. As the train started moving again, Amir Hossain fell between two carriages while hurrying to get down. He was rushed to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Narsingdi Sadar Hospital residential medical officer Dr Farida Gulshanara Kabir said the victim was brought to the hospital dead. The body was later handed over to the railway police.

Amir’s friend Akram Hossain, who climbed down just before him, said: “We three friends went to the Kella Shah shrine together. We couldn’t get inside the train due to the heavy crowd at dawn, so we climbed onto the roof. At Narsingdi, two of us managed to get down, but Amir couldn’t. He fell between the carriages as the train started. I watched him die right before my eyes.”

Narsingdi Railway Police outpost sub-inspector Dilip Chandra Sarkar said the body was handed over to the family without autopsy at their request.
