Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman General Dan Caine has advised U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to find a way to de-escalate the ongoing war with Iran, CNN reported on Friday (7 August). The account could not be independently verified.

The report said General Caine fears that escalating the war further may not bring the desired result; rather, Iran’s counterattacks could grow larger. He believes it may be difficult to force Iran to accept U.S. demands through air strikes alone.

Citing three sources, CNN said General Caine had discussed the matter with several top U.S. officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice-President JD Vance.

According to the report, General Caine and several officials had also voiced concern in late July over a plan for a larger military operation against Iran. They feared Iran might attack U.S. allies and Middle East energy infrastructure. When several Gulf countries also warned of such attacks, Trump ultimately postponed the operation.

Meanwhile, concern is growing over U.S. weapons stocks for waging a prolonged war. Officials believe that with stocks of air-defence missiles and precision-strike weapons falling, sustaining a long war could be difficult.

But General Caine also warned that, if needed, the United States could inflict major damage on Iran’s military capabilities — though that carries the risk of the war spreading further.

CNN reported that the U.S. administration is now seeking a solution that Trump can present as a political victory while keeping the path of diplomacy open. Among these is a possible deal to reopen commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
