Police in Jhalokati have recovered the body of a housewife, Molina Roy, 50, her hands bound, from a rented flat on T&T Road in the West Chandkathi area. Two other flats in the same building were also burgled, with gold jewellery and cash looted. The body was recovered from a three-storey building on T&T Road at around 8pm on Friday. According to sources at the sadar hospital, there was a bleeding wound below the victim’s ear. The body has been sent to the hospital morgue for a post-mortem.
Molina Roy was a ground-floor tenant of the building and the wife of Ratan Roy, who lives in Dhaka for work. On Friday, when most of the building’s residents went to Bhimruli and Kirtipasha for the Sri Sri Jagannath Dev chariot festival, Molina Roy was alone at home. Locals said that when residents returned at about 7:45pm, they found the locks of various flats from the ground to the third floor broken. Molina Roy’s daughter, Puja Roy, then entered and found her mother lying on the floor, her hands and feet bound and a sack over her head. Her screams brought neighbours, who took Molina Roy to Jhalokati Sadar Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.
The building’s owner, Tapan Halder, said miscreants had taken advantage of everyone going to the chariot festival to break the locks of the ground-floor tenant’s flat and the second- and third-floor flats, ransacking them and looting valuables. Third-floor tenant Pallabi Baral said she returned to find a woman on the ground floor had been killed, and that cash and valuables had been looted from her own flat and the owner’s flat too. Jhalokati additional superintendent of police (administration and finance) Mamun Al Islam and additional superintendent of police (sadar circle) SM Bayazid Ibne Akbar visited the scene. Jhalokati Sadar police officer-in-charge (OC) Md Mahmud Hasan said the initial assessment was that the woman had been killed for resisting during the burglary. Police have begun investigating to solve the case and identify those involved.
