With the import of green chillies from India starting, green chilli prices have begun falling in the wholesale and retail markets of Hili in Dinajpur. In the Hili wholesale market, local green chillies are selling at Tk 130, and imported green chillies at Tk 100 to 110 per kg, at the wholesale depots of Hili land port.

The information was found on a visit to Hili’s kitchen market on Saturday (8 August) afternoon.

Traders said prices had fallen at the country’s depots as imports rose, bringing some relief to ordinary buyers.

Ashikul Islam, a day labourer who came to buy green chillies at Hili market, said: “Last week I bought local green chillies at Tk 250 a kg. That same chilli is now selling at Tk 130 a kg. Traders say prices have fallen because of chillies coming from India. The price drop is a big help for day labourers like us. But if green chillies were available within Tk 100 a kg, it would help us even more.” Biplob Sheikh, a green-chilli seller at Hili market, said prices had begun falling at the country’s depots because of imports from India, with local green-chilli prices down by Tk 120 to 130 a kg compared with last week. “We are buying cheap and selling cheap, so buyers have also increased. If imports from India continue, prices may fall further,” he said.

Shahabul Islam, a green-chilli importer at Hili land port, said the government had allowed green-chilli imports from India to keep domestic prices stable, and importers were continuing accordingly. If the government extended the import deadline, green-chilli prices would stay under control, he said, adding that imports from India had already cut prices by Tk 150 to 200 per kg in the domestic market.

According to Hili Customs, 170 metric tons of green chillies were imported through Hili land port in 24 Indian trucks over three days last week. Hili Customs authorities are providing the necessary support for quick clearance of the imported chillies.
