RANGAMATI — A faction of Chhatra Dal members who were denied posts in the newly announced Rangamati district committee staged protests on Sunday, demanding its cancellation. They also accused the central general secretary, Nasir Uddin Nasir, of selling positions on the committee for money.

Reactions on social media intensified after the 23-member partial committee was announced Saturday night. Protesters alleged that married individuals, non-students and people living outside Rangamati city were given key posts. They were particularly angry that the convener of the Rajasthali upazila Chhatra Dal was made general secretary of the district committee. A protest march set out Sunday morning from the municipal square, moved through several city streets and gathered in front of the BNP office in Kathaltali. Demonstrators burned tires on the road and chanted slogans.

Protesters alleged that the committee was formed in exchange for money. They chanted, “If you want money, take money, but form a new committee.” Their blockade halted traffic on both sides of the road near the district BNP office.

Among those seen at the protest were vice presidents of the announced committee Nur Talukdar Munna, senior joint general secretary Abdus Shakur Javed, joint secretaries Mokhtar Ahmed and Parvez Hossain Sumon, and publicity secretary Abdul Ahad.

Nur Talukdar Munna, a vice president, said the person brought in from Rajasthali and named general secretary does not even know the activists of Rangamati city. He will not be accepted under any circumstances, Munna said.

Joint secretary Parvez Hossain Sumon said, “We have learned that the committee was formed in exchange for money and iPhones. We demand the immediate cancellation of this committee. To strengthen Chhatra Dal, the committee must be formed with regular students.”

Oli Ahad, president of the new committee, said Chhatra Dal is a large organization and everyone has sacrificed for it, but it is impossible to satisfy everyone at once. Those who did not get posts are expressing their anger, which is natural, he said. But everyone must abide by the organization’s discipline and trust the central leadership, he added.

The last committee of the Rangamati district Chhatra Dal was formed in May 2018, with Faruque Ahmed Sabbir as president and Ali Akbar Sumon as general secretary.
