Students in India’s Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh protested to demand construction of a road to their schools. On Tuesday, they walked about 5 kilometres with parents and villagers and staged a sit-in outside the district collectorate.

The Gen Alpha protesters said no paved road has been built for their villages towards Hamirpur from Chandupur since India’s independence. During the monsoon, the dirt road is submerged and students must cross mud and water to reach school. Their clothes become dirty, shoes are damaged and travel is difficult. They claimed that one student had even been forced to leave school because there was no road.

Carrying posters with slogans including “Farmers, students and the sick are suffering—build the Chandupur-Hamirpur road”, the students demanded that construction begin quickly.

Sub-divisional magistrate Abhishek Kumar and the circle officer discussed the issue with students and parents. The protest was withdrawn after officials assured them that roadwork would start soon.

Meanwhile, Abhijit Deep, founder of the Gen Z protest group Cockroach Janata Party, praised the Gen Alpha movement. The organisation plans to launch a campaign called “Fix the School” on Independence Day to improve rural government schools.
