India’s Border Security Force (BSF) tried to push three people, including two women, into Bangladesh at the West Ramkrishnapur border in Joypurhat Sadar upazila, but the attempt was foiled by the vigilance of local villagers and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), sources said.
The BSF tried to send an elderly man and two women into Bangladesh through the 275/8-S sub-pillar area of West Ramkrishnapur around 4 a.m. on Saturday. According to villagers and BGB sources, the BSF members switched off the border light posts before dawn and tried to force the three across. Local villagers keeping watch at the border spotted the move, stopped them on the spot and informed the BGB, which quickly reached the scene, took the three into custody and reinforced its position at the zero line.
One of those detained is an elderly man, Hafizur Rahman, 65, whose home is initially reported to be in Narail district. The identities of the two women with him could not be immediately confirmed. Sofiqul Islam, a member of the local Dhalahar union council, said the villagers had united to resist the push-in at dawn and had then informed the BGB.
As of the latest reports, BGB and BSF members were positioned at the zero line (no-man’s-land) along with the three people. Hasanur Rahman, assistant director of Patnitala 14 BGB, said: “We are at the scene and monitoring the situation. Necessary communication and preparations for a flag meeting between the two forces are under way to resolve the situation and send them back.”
