Police have submitted a charge sheet to court against three people in the murder of Jobayed Hossain, a statistics student of Jagannath University’s 2019-20 session and a Chhatra Dal leader.
According to the charge sheet, the accused are a female student and, police say, girlfriend of Jobayed; her boyfriend, Mahir Rahman; and Mahir’s friend, Fardin Ahmed Aylan. In the police account, Mahir was the main attacker, the female student was the planner of the killing, and Aylan an accomplice.
Bangshal Police Station sub-inspector and case investigating officer Md Ashraf Hossain recently submitted the charge sheet to a Dhaka court. It analyses the statements of 50 witnesses, along with CCTV footage, mobile forensics, DNA and other scientific test reports.
The charge sheet states that Jobayed was killed on 19 October last year at Roushan Villa, 15 Nurbox Lane, in Armanitola in Puran Dhaka, where he had gone to tutor the female student. Around 4:30 p.m. that day he was stabbed on the ground floor of the house and was found lying face down, bloodied, on the third-floor stairs.
A day after the incident, Jobayed’s elder brother, Enayet Hossain Saikat, filed a murder case at Bangshal Police Station as plaintiff. After nearly nine months of investigation, investigating officer Md Ashraf Hossain filed the charge sheet in court on 30 June.
The investigation found that this was not a spur-of-the-moment attack; rather, the killing was carried out after a month of planning, surveillance, visits to the scene and waiting for an opportunity, the investigating officer said. According to the charge sheet, the killing stemmed from a relationship dispute, and Jobayed was murdered out of fear that private images would be made public.
Ishtiaq Hossain Jipu, lawyer for the complainant, said the charge sheet had been submitted to the prosecution’s GRO branch and was under review by senior authorities before being placed before the judge. He said the DNA report matched Mahir, that Mahir’s statement under Section 164 was on record, and that there was no way for him to escape the charge.
