Police have recovered the body of a sub-inspector (SI), Aminul Islam, 35, found hanging in a room of a residential hotel at Bortakia Bazar in Mirsarai, Chattogram. His wife, 28, and their 10-month-old child were recovered injured and bloodied from the same room.

Aminul Islam’s body was recovered at about 11am on Monday from room 104 of the “Relax Zone” residential hotel at Bortakia Bazar in the upazila. He was the son of Abul Hossain of Khoiyachhara union, and was serving as an SI at the Rangamati Hill District police lines. His wife is a resident of the Hajishwarai area of the upazila.

According to hotel authorities and police, Aminul Islam rented room 104 with his wife and infant child at about 2pm on Sunday (9 August). Hotel staff said the couple went out of the room twice, in the afternoon and at night, and that no unusual sound or scream was heard during the night.

At about 9:30am on Monday, the duty manager knocked repeatedly on their door. Getting no response, he alerted others. His wife then opened the door from inside, bloodied. Aminul Islam was found hanging beside the bed, and the 10-month-old child was also inside.

Hotel manager Sohan said the family had taken the room on Sunday afternoon and gone out twice, after which he went to his own room and heard nothing; in the morning, getting no response to his knocking, he informed everyone.

Mirsarai circle assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Nadim Haider Chowdhury said police went to the scene on getting the news in the morning, recovered the injured wife and sent her to hospital, and found the husband’s body hanging in the same room. An inquest report was being prepared and the body was being sent to Chattogram for autopsy; details would be given later.

Locals said Aminul had left home with his wife and child saying he was going to register the child’s birth, and questioned why they had instead spent the night at a hotel in the market near their home. The cause of death has not been established and is under investigation.
