In a city of brick and concrete, Khalid Hasan, a businessman at Balijuri Bazar in Jamalpur’s Madarganj municipality and the municipal BNP’s organizing secretary, has built a unique rooftop garden that brings a touch of green. What began as a hobby now boasts more than a hundred native and exotic fruit trees.
Started in late 2024, the garden features rose apple, apple, sapodilla and various other fruit trees. Madarganj upazila agriculture officer Md Habibur Rahman visited the unusual rooftop garden Tuesday afternoon, August 18.
During the on-site visit, sub-assistant agriculture officers accompanied the upazila agriculture officer. They toured the various trees in the garden and offered scientific advice on tree care, disease management and pest control.
Agriculture officials said regular use of organic fertilizer is essential to retain necessary nutrients in the soil of the garden’s pots. They also advised applying pesticides at the appropriate time, as needed, to protect the trees from insect and fungal attacks during and after the monsoon season.
Madarganj upazila agriculture officer Md Habibur Rahman said rooftop gardens offer city dwellers a place of peace amid busy urban life, while also playing a role in maintaining environmental balance. If every unused rooftop in the city could be transformed into greenery this way, he said, it could play a significant role in tackling the harmful effects of climate change.
Khalid Hasan’s rooftop garden has now become a model for local residents to follow. Built amid the city’s brick and concrete, this green garden offers nature lovers a small pocket of tranquility.
