Two killed as autorickshaw hits parked truck in Chhatak

Two passengers have been killed in a road accident in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj, when a CNG-run autorickshaw struck the back of a truck parked beside the highway. Four others, including the autorickshaw driver, were seriously injured in the incident.

The accident took place in front of the house of Musabbir Miah in Jatua village, on the Sylhet-Sunamganj regional highway in Dakshin Khurma union of the upazila, in the early hours of Thursday (30 July).

Those killed are Rajab Ali, 50, a resident of Kalyanpur village in Dowarabazar upazila, and Md Nur Uddin, 35, a resident of GT village in Chhatak upazila. Four others, including the autorickshaw driver, were injured in the accident. Several of the injured are said to be in a critical condition.

According to police and local sources, a truck was parked beside the road in the Sylhet-bound lane. A number-less CNG-run autorickshaw coming at speed lost control and struck the back of the truck. In the force of the collision the front of the autorickshaw was crushed. Two passengers died at the scene.

Hearing the sound of the accident, local people quickly rushed to the scene and began rescue work. On receiving the news, Joykalos Highway police reached the scene. With the help of local people the injured were rescued and given first aid, then sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment. The bodies were recovered and sent to the morgue of Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem.

The sub-inspector of Joykalos Highway police station, Md Zahirul Islam, said: “On getting news of the accident we quickly reached the scene and carried out a rescue operation. Treatment has been arranged for the injured. An investigation is under way to establish the actual cause of the accident, and the necessary legal steps are being taken.”
