Police have arrested three people over the sensational killing of CNG auto-rickshaw driver Md Hridoy (24) at Dhorkora Bazar in Cumilla’s Chauddagram. Though it began with a motorcycle collision, police’s preliminary investigation found that Hridoy was stabbed to death on Wednesday (10 June) night over a love triangle. Hridoy was the youngest son of the late Hedayet Ullah, alias Hedu, of Shaktala village in the upazila’s Chiora union. The arrested are Nurul Amin Pansi, son of Najir Ahammad of Ghoshtal village in Chiora union; Tahmid Ahmed Khondkar Pranto, son of Aftab Uddin Khondkar; and Jasim Uddin (49), son of the late Abdul Halim of Gangra village in Jagannathdighi union — said to be one of the chief local drug and contraband dealers.
Hridoy’s brother, Md Faruk, filed a murder case at the station. According to the case, Shahadat Hossain Asif, Abdullah Joni and Md Nayan of Shaktala village went to one Kaiyum’s fuel shop on the east side of Dhorkora Bazar around 8pm on Wednesday to buy fuel for a motorcycle. Pranto, Rashed and Najir Ahmed of Ghoshtal village, arriving from the opposite direction on another motorcycle, hit Joni’s motorcycle, leading to an exchange of words and a scuffle. Local people present settled it at once, but Pranto and his group left after openly threatening Asif’s group. On hearing of it, CNG driver Md Hridoy came and learned the details; at one point Rajib — a marked drug dealer and troublemaker of Ghoshtal — along with Pansi and Bijoy alias Rifat of Dimatli village arrived by motorcycle and seriously injured Shahadat Hossain Asif and Abdullah Joni with indiscriminate punches and kicks. When Hridoy tried to save Asif and Joni, Md Rajib drew a sharp knife from his waist and stabbed Hridoy below the ribs on the right side of his chest. Hridoy cried out and collapsed on the road, bleeding heavily; the attackers fled by motorcycle. People present took Hridoy to Rex Diagnostic Hospital at Dhorkora Bazar, where doctors, finding his condition critical, advised moving him quickly to the Chauddagram upazila health complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Police’s preliminary investigation found that a married woman named Riya in the Dhorkora Bazar area of Chiora union had close relationships with two young men, Al Amin Hossain Rakib and Tahmid Ahmed Khondkar Pranto; Riya’s husband is abroad. When contact with Riya was cut off for some days, Rakib blamed Pranto, leading to a dispute between the two. Chauddagram Model police officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Arif Hossain said on Thursday (11 June) that police conducted an immediate drive on receiving news of the incident and arrested three people, that the love-triangle angle had emerged in the preliminary investigation, and that operations continue to arrest the main killer Rajib and the other accused; the woman, Riya, has been taken into police custody for questioning. After the autopsy, police handed Hridoy’s body to his family on Thursday afternoon.
