Husband killed, wife injured in rival attack in Chougacha

Jewel Rana (40) has been killed in an attack by rivals in Jashore’s Chougacha, with his wife, Maya Khatun, injured in the incident. It took place at Muktadaha village in Patibila union of the upazila on Thursday (11 June) afternoon. Jewel Rana was the son of Odud Khondkar of Muktadaha village.

According to police and local residents, Jewel Rana was an Awami League worker who had a long-running feud over political differences with Nazrul Islam Member, Yusuf Ali, Kashem Ali and Babu Rahman of the same village. On the day of the incident, Jewel Rana was sitting at a tea shop at Muktadaha Mor on the Chougacha-Kotchandpur road talking politics, during which he made disparaging remarks about his rivals; enraged, the rivals’ men attacked him, breaking both his legs below the knee and leaving him seriously injured. His wife, Maya Khatun, was also injured trying to save her husband from the attackers. Local people rescued them and admitted them to Chougacha Government Model Hospital, where Maya Khatun received first aid; with Jewel Rana’s condition critical, doctors referred him to Jashore for advanced treatment, where the duty doctor at the emergency department of Jashore Sadar Hospital declared him dead.

Chougacha police officer-in-charge (OC) Mamunur Rashid confirmed the incident, saying police had been sent to the area, a case was being prepared, and two people had been brought in for questioning, with operations continuing to detain the accused.
