A 12-year-old student died after a venomous snake bit the child while asleep at home in Alamdanga, Chuadanga. Local residents said delays in seeking hospital care and ineffective treatment from traditional healers contributed to the death.

The incident occurred Sunday night, Aug. 2, in Chhaygharia village of the upazila’s Ailhans union.

The child, a fifth-grade student at a local government primary school, lived in the village.

Local residents said the snake bit the child while the student was asleep at home Sunday night. The family could not initially confirm the bite because the room was dark. As the venom spread and the child began writhing in pain, relatives rushed the student to a village traditional healer. Without conducting any examination, the healer said it was not a snakebite.

When the pain worsened, the family took the child to a second traditional healer. After that treatment also failed, they took the student to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, but the delay proved fatal. A doctor examined the child on arrival and declared the student dead.

Residents alleged that a lack of awareness and superstition had delayed hospital treatment and led to the death.
