A 10-day tree-planting drive and tree fair has begun in Chuadanga under the slogan “Adorn the country with trees, Bangladesh first of all.” To mark the occasion, a rally set out from the deputy commissioner’s office on Thursday morning. The rally went around various roads of the town and ended at the open-air stage in front of Chuadanga Government College. After the rally, the tree fair was formally inaugurated. A discussion meeting followed.
The divisional forest officer of the Kushtia social forestry division, Rezaul Alam, gave the welcome address at the start of the discussion. The deputy director of local government and municipal administrator, Sharmin Akter, chaired the meeting. The member of parliament for the Chuadanga-1 constituency, Advocate Masud Parvez Rasel, was present as chief guest at the inauguration.
It was announced at the inauguration that the tree fair would run at the open-air stage grounds of Chuadanga Government College from 30 July to 8 August. A total of 14 stalls taking part from the district’s four upazilas have been arranged to display and sell various species of fruit, timber and medicinal trees and other kinds of plants.
At the end of the discussion meeting, the guests handed saplings to students and called for more and more tree-planting to protect the environment.
The event, conducted by the head of the Bengali department of Chuadanga Government College, Dr Munshi Abu Saif, was attended as special guests by the administrator of the Chuadanga zila parishad and general secretary of the district BNP, Sharifuzzaman Sharif; the additional deputy commissioner (general) of Chuadanga, Nayan Kumar Rajbanshi; a former principal of Chuadanga Government College, Siddiqur Rahman; the deputy director of the department of agricultural extension, Masudur Rahman Sarkar; the district information officer, Shilpi Mondal; the executive officer of Sadar upazila, Tithi Mitra; the district Ansar and VDP commandant, Rafiqul Islam; and the general secretary of Chuadanga Press Club, Shah Alam Soni, along with leaders of various political parties, media workers, teachers and students and people of various classes and professions.
