CHUNARUGHAT, Bangladesh — Local authorities in Habiganj’s Chunarughat municipal town have launched an eviction drive to clear illegal sidewalk shops set up on government land along both sides of the main road, officials said.
The operation began at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 7, led by Toufiq Anwar, the upazila assistant commissioner (land), according to the upazila administration.
The drive involved staff from the upazila administration, law enforcement and municipal sanitation workers. Illegal shops set up along the roadside were removed, and occupiers were warned, officials said.
Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chunarughat police station; Faruq Uddin Chowdhury, the local press club president; and municipal executive officer Liaquat Mia were among those present.
“The eviction drive has started today,” Anwar said. “If anyone occupies government land in violation of the law, strict action will be taken. This drive will continue.”
