Not in an office or at home, but out in the open in an unsecured setting, an examiner named Iqbal Hossain (Sohan) was grading Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Bengali second-paper answer scripts while sitting at a tea stall. A few of his friends were with him during the evaluation. On learning of it, education board officials seized 400 answer scripts from the examiner.

The incident took place on Saturday night at a tea stall beside the main gate of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). It has caused a stir within the education board and among examiners. The accused examiner, Iqbal Hossain (Sohan), is a lecturer at Sylhet Metrocity Women’s College.

On Sunday, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the metropolitan police’s Jalalabad station, Shamsul Habib, said education board officials had come with a teacher over an allegation of grading scripts at a tea stall. They filed a general diary (GD) at the station, which recorded the recovery of 400 answer scripts from the teacher in an unsecured state.

Over the incident of the scripts being seized at the tea stall, a three-member investigation committee has been formed with the college inspector as its convener. The committee will submit its report within the next three working days. A show-cause letter was also sent to the head of the examiner’s institution on Sunday.

According to the education board and local shopkeepers, Iqbal Hossain Sohan was evaluating the HSC answer scripts at around 10:30pm on Saturday at Fazlul Haque’s tea stall in front of the university’s main gate. Several of his friends, former SUST students, were also present.

The stall owner, Fazlul Haque, said they had also sat at the shop the previous night, on Friday. He said they were looking at papers inside while the shop was being set up, and that teachers came and took one person away along with a sack of scripts.

On receiving information that scripts were being graded at the shop, the education board’s examinations controller, Professor Bilkis Yasmin, arrived at the tea stall with two other officials at around 11:30pm. Two officials first entered the shop and found three people besides the examiner, one of them a woman. When the examinations controller then went inside, one person slipped away. Having confirmed the report, the controller informed police, who seized the scripts and took them to the station. The board filed a GD and the examinations controller took the scripts into her own custody.

The examinations controller, Professor Bilkis Yasmin, said the examiner had been found grading scripts at a tea stall and that 400 scripts had been seized from him. The teacher had been issued a show-cause notice and a three-member committee had been formed, which would report within three working days.
