A two-and-a-half-year-old child was killed in a collision between a drum truck and a motorcycle in Gazipur. The child’s father, Jewel Rana, 36, and mother, Suraiya Akter Rupa, 30, were injured in the incident.
The accident happened on Friday (19 June) morning in the Chamudda area under Pubail police station in Gazipur city, on the Dhaka Bypass highway.
Jewel Rana is the son of Nazim Uddin from Bangra village in Sherpur upazila of Bogura district. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
Atikur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s (GMP) Pubail police station, said Jewel Rana was travelling by motorcycle from his village home in Sherpur, Bogura, with his wife and his two-and-a-half-year-old son to his workplace in Chattogram. On the way, when they reached the Chamudda area of Pubail in Gazipur city, their motorcycle collided head-on with a drum truck.
In the crash, Jewel Rana and his wife, Suraiya Akter Rupa, were thrown onto the road and injured, and their young son died on the spot.
On receiving the news, police reached the scene and recovered the child’s body. The seriously injured parents were sent to Gazipur’s Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
The OC added that the family had applied for the child’s body to be released without an autopsy, and that further legal steps would be taken after discussion with senior authorities. The driver fled at speed with the drum truck after the accident.
