Four child madrasa students drown in canal in Narsingdi

Four children have died after going to bathe in a canal in Raipura, Narsingdi. The accident happened at midday on Thursday in the Barkanda area of the upazila’s Chanderkandi union.

The children who died were four girls, aged 13, 9, 8 and 10. They were students at the Gausia Nure Madina Women’s Madrasa in the Barkanda area.

Raipura police station officer-in-charge Najmul Hasan confirmed the deaths.

Relatives said six of them went together to bathe in a nearby canal during a break in madrasa classes. After a while, two came to the bank and told locals that the others had gone under. People then went into the canal, recovered four children and took them to the upazila health complex.

Ashrafur Rahman, a doctor in the health complex’s emergency department, said three were brought in dead at 1pm; the body of another was taken from the scene by the family.

OC Najmul Hasan said the next necessary steps would be taken after discussion with the victims’ families.
