Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dhaka metropolitan north unit has launched a “July graffiti art” programme on various roads in the capital’s Uttara to mark “36 July.” Dhaka metropolitan north Jamaat Amir Mohammad Selim Uddin formally inaugurated the programme in the North Tower Housebuilding area on Saturday morning.
He said a situation like July’s mass uprising could arise again in future because of the rulers’ weakness and their disregard for the people’s referendum aspirations, and that the government should keep a careful watch so that such a situation does not occur. He also alleged that some were trying to rehabilitate the Awami League by following its narrative. The DNCC mayoral candidate said those who take a stand against July would be rejected by the people, and that the people would not accept any conspiracy or insulting remarks about July.
Selim Uddin said the success of “36 July” was achieved through a mass uprising in which millions took part, and that Bangladesh must be run by upholding the spirit of July; as long as Bangladesh exists, the memory and graffiti of July should be preserved by the state. He said Uttara had played an important role in the July movement, where many were killed and injured, and the then government’s forces had carried out house-to-house raids, torture and repression. He said the way the Awami League’s old narrative was being aired on various television talk shows was worrying, and that people would not accept any attempt to distort or insult the history of July. Organisers said a “July in memory” competition would be held from 20 to 30 July, a “July in brush” painting competition on 25 July, and a graffiti-drawing programme until 31 July, with the best graffiti artists to be awarded.
