More than 36 hours after the event, India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has still not returned the body of Tara Miah (20), a young Bangladeshi shot dead by the BSF at the Alinagar border in Kulaura. As of 4pm on Monday, 10 August, no information about the body’s return had been given to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Tara Miah was the son of Abdul Malek of Muraichhara slum in the upazila. According to the BGB and Kulaura police, Tara Miah was shot dead by the BSF in the Maguruli area on the Indian side of the Alinagar border around 4am on Sunday night. With 36 hours passed and no body returned, the dead man’s family has sought urgent intervention from senior government authorities.

The company commander of the BGB’s Alinagar BOP said Indian authorities had given no decision on returning the body. Muraichhara camp commander Sadek said the BGB had lodged a strong protest over the killing of the young Bangladeshi, condemning that he had been shot dead rather than detained even though he had crossed into Indian territory. A company-commander-level flag meeting was held, at which the BGB demanded the body’s swift return. Kulaura police officer-in-charge (OC) Zahirul Islam Munna said the Indian police had given no information about returning the body up to Monday afternoon.
