Police have recovered the half-decomposed body of a 40-year-old businessman from a furniture shop in the Panti Golabari market of Panti union in Kumarkhali upazila, Kushtia. Police say they initially suspect he may have died by suicide under debt pressure, but the cause has not been formally established.

The body was recovered from the shop around 12:30 pm on Saturday while people were searching for the source of a foul smell. It was later sent to the morgue at Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy.

Family members and police said the man, who was from the Panti Golabari market area, had returned home after a long time abroad and ran a furniture business alongside work arranging overseas jobs. He had been missing since last Wednesday; although his mobile phone was switched on, he was not answering calls.

Family members said a foul smell had been coming from the shop in the morning and everyone assumed something had rotted. When the shutter was opened, his body was found inside. The family had been ill with diarrhoea, and he had not come home for four or five days despite a long search.

Kumarkhali police station officer-in-charge Jamal Uddin said the initial suspicion is that the man died under debt pressure, but with the body half-decomposed the matter is not clear. The true cause of death will be known after the autopsy report.
