Due to days of continuous rainfall and rising water pressure from upstream flooding, the connecting road to Beltoli Bridge — built on the only road leading to Nitai Union Parishad in Nilphamari’s Kishoreganj — has collapsed. Heavy vehicle traffic on the road has been halted as a result.

According to the upazila engineering office, the 140-meter bridge was built over the Chharalkata River at Mushrut Paniyal Pukur Beltoli Ghat in Nitai union in 2014 at a cost of several crore taka. Since its construction, the southern side of the bridge has collapsed nearly every year during heavy monsoon rainfall.

Abu Taleb and Sohidar Rahman, residents of Mushrut Paniyal Pukur village in Nitai union, said the road collapsing in the same spot almost every year since the bridge was built has caused repeated suffering for local people. They said officials from the upazila engineering office and administration visit, carry out only token repairs to make the road passable, and then leave.

Nitai union chairman Mottakinur Rahman Abu said the southern connecting road of the bridge breaks every year and is repaired every year. He said the engineering office should undertake a large-scale allocation to permanently resolve the erosion of the connecting road, instead of carrying out perfunctory repairs each year that leave the road collapsing repeatedly at the same spot and causing hardship for the public.

Upazila engineer Mahmudul Hasan said: “After receiving news that the southern connecting road of the bridge had collapsed, halting traffic, I visited the site along with the upazila executive officer (UNO). Traffic remains suspended at present, and we are working to quickly repair the collapsed section to restore normal movement. A larger allocation will later be arranged for a permanent solution.”
