A program to re-excavate a five-kilometer canal and plant trees along both its banks has been launched in Majbari union of Kaluakhali upazila in Rajbari. The canal, running from the Kumorgara beel in Ward 7 of the union toward Betbariya via the Garai Tikri beel in Ward 6 and Munai beel, will be re-excavated.

Mezbah Uddin, the Kaluakhali upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), inaugurated the canal re-excavation project and the tree-planting program as chief guest on Monday (June 15).

Those present included Md Lutfar Rahman, president of Kaluakhali upazila BNP; Nimai Chandra Ray, the upazila project implementation officer; Kazi Shariful Islam, chairman of Majbari Union Parishad; Dulal Moulobi, president of Mrigi union BNP; and local dignitaries.

Kaluakhali UNO Mezbah Uddin said, “Work on re-excavating five kilometers of canal in our Majbari union is under way as a priority piloting project. I hope this work will be completed properly within the scheduled time.”

He added, “Alongside creating employment, this tree-planting initiative will help protect against natural disasters, including lightning strikes. Once the canal excavation is complete, waterlogging will be reduced and water-holding capacity will increase. Irrigation facilities will be available for farmland. I seek everyone’s cooperation in carrying out the canal re-excavation and tree-planting program.”

After the event, UNO Mezbah Uddin said, “About 2,000 saplings will be planted. Local people should look after these trees so they thrive. This is your asset and mine.”

The re-excavation of the five-kilometer canal and the tree planting in the union’s Majbari area are being carried out under the Employment Generation Programme for the Poorest (EGPP) of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief for the 2025-26 fiscal year, through the upazila disaster management directorate. The work has been costed at Tk 1 crore 28 lakh 78 thousand 537, with 297 workers employed as day laborers for 43 days at a rate of Tk 500 a day.
