There is no alternative to technical education for building a developed Bangladesh, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has said. There is also no alternative to technical and vocational education and training for turning the country’s population into human resources, he said.

He made the remarks Sunday, August 23, as chief guest at an event titled “A National Dialogue on TVET for a Skilled and Productive Bangladesh,” held in the capital’s Dhanmondi.

The education minister said technical education plays an extremely important role in the country’s socioeconomic development. “We need to move beyond the conventional idea of education alone,” he said. “Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has adopted a plan to turn the country’s vast population into human resources. We are moving forward with that goal in mind. That’s why we’re working with the greatest emphasis on technical education.”

He also said there is huge global demand for people skilled in technical education. Expatriate workers are one of the country’s main sources of foreign currency, he said, and if skilled workers can be sent abroad, the economy will grow further. For this reason, he said, greater emphasis needs to be placed on technical education. Toward that goal, he said, four more engineering colleges are being established. In addition, he said, the government wants to build Dhaka Polytechnic Institute into a model institution, and a separate project is being undertaken for that purpose.

Md Daud Mia, secretary of the Technical and Madrasa Education Division, took part in the discussion as special guest.
