Qawmipedia, a Qawmi madrasa-based information bank, has published a list of the country’s five most influential Islamic scholars. Released on 29 July, the list places Maulana Mamunul Haque first, Maulana Mahmudul Hasan second, Maulana Muhibbullah Babunagari third, Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim fourth and Dr Maulana AFM Khalid Hossain fifth.
Maulana Mamunul Haque, who tops the list, is the Amir of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis. He is widely known across the Qawmi arena and the country as a prominent Islamic scholar, orator and politician.
In second place is Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, who holds key positions as president of Al Haiatul Ulya — the highest body of Qawmi madrasas — and of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh, the largest education board, as well as director general of Jamia Islamia Darul Uloom Madania.
Third is Maulana Muhibbullah Babunagari, the current Amir of Hefazat-e-Islam. He is a prominent Deobandi Islamic scholar and politician and the director general of Al Jamiatul Islamia Azizul Uloom Babunagar.
Fourth on the list is Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim, senior naib-e-amir of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, well known as a distinguished Islamic scholar, political figure and educationist.
Fifth place went to Dr Maulana AFM Khalid Hossain, a distinguished Islamic scholar and former religious affairs adviser to the interim government. Alongside his tenure at the Ministry of Religious Affairs during the interim government, he has been associated with various Qawmi and social institutions in the past.
The list of influential scholars published by Qawmipedia has generated wide discussion in various quarters of the country’s religious sphere.
