India’s Supreme Court has rejected a plea for an urgent hearing in a case filed over the baton charge on participants in the Cockroach Janata Party’s movement. A lawyer sought an urgent hearing before the chief justice’s bench on Wednesday, but the country’s highest court declined to hear it.

Chief Justice Surya Kant told the lawyer: “Do not waste our time. Do not waste your own time either.”

The lawyer told the court that the protesters were demonstrating in the public interest, protesting over the NEET paper leak. Cutting him off mid-sentence, the chief justice said: “Thank you very much.”

The lawyer then tried to show some videos as evidence of police brutality. But the chief justice said: “We have no time. We cannot watch any videos.”

The Delhi High Court had also refused an urgent hearing on the matter on Tuesday. On the case filed over police brutality, the Delhi High Court said: “Do not drag the court into all this.”

The Cockroach Janata Party and its supporters are continuing their protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding reform of the education system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The Cockroach Janata Party was born out of a remark by this same chief justice, Surya Kant, who had referred to the country’s unemployed young people as “cockroaches.”
